Darren McGarvey visits his local CAB to meet the people helping the citizens in Pollok everyday.
We followed Darren as he visited his local Citizens Advice Bureau in Pollok where he spends the day speaking to staff, volunteers and clients about their experience of the CAB network and how it helps people throughout Scotland.
“Something I found really interesting about Citizens Advice Bureaux I didn’t realise was that they have actually been operating a pre-welfare state. “That means there isn’t an institution in public life which is perhaps better-placed or more experienced in terms of dealing with the evolving needs and concerns of citizens. “Ultimately it is an invaluable service. What you can be assured of when you set foot in the door is that you are going to be treated like a human being, you’re going to be seen as an equal, you’re going to be treated with compassion and you’re going to be treated with respect.”
We learnt a great deal about the invaluable service that the Citizens Advice Bureau provides to the local people. There are now 59 bureaux throughout Scotland with the first one opening in Glasgow in 1939. Each bureau is a charity in its own right and offers advice on a wide range of issues such as social security, debt, consumer issues, tribunal support and help with energy bills to the people of Scotland.
We were invited to the reception at the Scottish Parliament in Holyrood where the film was screened to an audience including senior Citizens Advice Representatives and MSPs across all parties. It was great working with Darren and it was a real eye-opener for him as well as us as the Citizens Advice Bureaux provide such an important service to the people of Scotland that is often underappreciated.
