We collaborated with Solas Neon to create our own bespoke Neon sign.
They are one of the UK’s last workshop that designs, manufactures and fabricates all of their neons in-house, with years of experience in the business. Working with clients across the country they create custom neon signs that pack a punch and are everlasting. As fellow creatives they push the boundaries when it comes to design.
We collaborated with the guys to create a short film that would tell the story of Solas Neon and show their unique skills to the world. This content would be used for their social media channels and website.
When we arrived at the address of the workshop, we were bemused to find ourselves outside a disused railway building off Slateford Road in Edinburgh. Once inside the building we were welcomed by the warm glow and buzzing sound from the various coloured illuminated neons. It was a surprising but striking contrast to the exterior of the workshop.
We shot footage in their workshop and interviewed Emery and Sandy to gain a real insight into why they started the business, how they came to learn these skills and of course the process of making a neon sign. It is rare to find something handmade from start to finish, in this country and with such passion but these guys are driven by a slightly mad enthusiasm for what they do. We wanted to do Solas justice by creating a high end video production that would showcase their talent, passion and neon lights in the best possible way.
Emery who is the younger of the two guys is newer to the game but has a real flair for innovation and design and Sandy is the experienced mentor who has passed his skills onto the next generation in way. Together they make an ideal team and are reigniting what was a dying art. Neons certainly aren’t an easy thing to create but there is something quite magical about them being switched on and we can see why Solas are so passionate about what they do.
